Learning outcomes describe what students are able to do as a result of their learning experiences and characterize the knowledge, abilities, skills, values, behaviors, or "habits of mind" that students gain from a variety of contexts, both inside and outside of the classroom, during their time at MICA.
A learning outcome should be concise, use action verbs, and describe an observable or measurable ability, skill, value or behavior. This statement typically includes:
- A measurable description of what the student will be able to do
- Under what conditions the student will be able to do it.
- How well the student will be able to do it.
There are different levels of learning outcomes. At MICA, there are Institutional Learning Outcomes (ILO's), Divisional Learning Outcomes, Program Learning Outcomes (PLO's), and Course Learning Outcomes (CLO's). PLO's describe what students are expected to achieve as a result of their education in a program. PLO's align with ILO's. CLO's describe what a student is expected to be able to do as a result of their learning in a course. CLO's align with the PLO's and ILO's.
