Smith's current book project analyzes Turkey's art world of the 1950s in order to elucidate a central but overlooked phenomenon of the twentieth century: the use of art by so-called minor players in the Cold War to negotiate hegemonic powers' imposition of economic and political standards. Her writing has appeared in Art Journal, ARTMargins, Bidoun, and frieze, and her research has been supported by the ACLS, Terra Foundation for American Art, and the Fulbright scholar program.
