Sarah-Neel Smith holds a Ph.D. in Art History from the University of California, Los Angeles, and a B.A. from Smith College.

Smith's current book project analyzes Turkey's art world of the 1950s in order to elucidate a central but overlooked phenomenon of the twentieth century: the use of art by so-called minor players in the Cold War to negotiate hegemonic powers' imposition of economic and political standards. Her writing has appeared in Art Journal, ARTMargins, Bidoun, and frieze, and her research has been supported by the ACLS, Terra Foundation for American Art, and the Fulbright scholar program. At MICA, Smith teaches Modernism and After (1860-1960) and the advanced seminars Istanbul: Art and the City, Museums and the Middle East, Visual Culture of the Ottoman Empire (1839-1923), and Visual Culture of 9/11.
