Kaoru Kuwhata

Ru Kuwahata is an award-winning animation director who was born in Tokyo, Japan. Her studies took her to the United States and she graduated from Parsons the New school for Design with BFA in Illustration and Animation.

After several years of working at various animation studios in New York, Ru began collaborating with Max Porter under the moniker, Tiny Inventions. Known for their unique mixed-media animation which combines hand-crafted art and digital techniques, they have directed and produced TV commercials, music videos, PSAs, a large-scale toy line and independent films. 

Their independent films have screened in over 300 film festivals worldwide, including Sundance Film Festival and Annecy Animation Festival, and have received 25 international awards.

In 2011, Ru was invited to work on a new animated film at the Netherlands Institute for Animated Film in Tilburg. During her 19 months residency, she explored new animation techniques, experimented with cinematic storytelling and created an episodic comic based on cultural observations. Her newest film, "Between Times," is co-produced with Netherlands Institute for Animated Film and will be released in early 2014.

In addition to her professional works, Ru has taught at Parsons the New School for Design worked as a thesis advisor in the MFA program at the School of Visual Arts and held workshops at various academic institutions around the world. Most recently, her work was documented in the "Creative Sparks" series for Lynda.com and she was invited to judge for the moving image category at the Society of Illustrators 56th Annual Exhibition.
