Life and Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D)
MICA provides you with life insurance and accidental death & dismemberment (AD&D) coverage through Aetna in the coverage amount of one times your annual salary, with a minimum of $50,000 and a maximum of $250,000, during your employment at MICA. You must designate a beneficiary for this coverage. See PB&C to update your beneficiary at any time.

Disability Insurance
The purpose of disability insurance is to replace a portion of your income if you become disabled due to a covered sickness or off-the-job injury.
There are two categories of disability insurance:
- Short Term Disability (STD)
- Long Term Disability (LTD)
Short Term Disability (STD)
For Staff employees:
Your eligibility in short-term disability insurance is based on your length of service with the College and dependent upon proof of disability from your physician. If your claim is validated, the College will pay short-term disability, if you are eligible, for up to 180 days. For an illness there is a five-day elimination period; for an accident, there is a zero-day elimination period. Click here for information on submitting a claim to The Hartford.
Eligibility is based on the following schedule:
- After 1 year of continuous Full-time service- Your income is paid at 100% of full regular pay through short-term disability insurance.
For Faculty employees:
Your eligibility for short-term disability insurance is effective after one year of continuous full-time employment with the College and dependent upon proof of disability from your physician. After your sick days are exhausted, the College will pay short-term disability, if you are eligible, for up to 180 days.
Eligibility is based on the following schedule:
- Your income is paid at 100% of full regular pay through short-term disability insurance.
If you are on short-term disability leave you will continue the status of "Active Employee," which allows you to continue in the benefit programs. During short-term disability leave, you will continue to receive service time without interruption. If you become disabled due to a covered sickness or off-the-job injury, contact the PB&C department to make a claim for short-term disability. Long Term Disability (LTD)
You are covered by the LTD policy when the short-term disability elimination period has been exhausted and your disability continues beyond that period. You are eligible for LTD coverage on the first day of the month following or coinciding with your hire date. LTD coverage is based on your salary and provides a monthly benefit of 60% of your basic monthly earnings (not to exceed a maximum plan benefit of $5,000 per month). Workers' Compensation
In the case of on-the-job injury or illness, the College's workers' compensation insurance policy would be in effect. You must report the accident to Campus Safety, PB&C, and your supervisor immediately. PB&C will then file a workers' compensation claim on your behalf.
