NCYP 205 Creating Art with Adobe Photoshop (Grades 6-8)

Grades 6-8. This course involves students using digital imaging programs to create and manipulate images pixel by pixel! Students learn to use the Adobe Photoshop suite and scan images as they explore the potential of the medium and create personally meaningful compositions. Using various created and found images, students then learn how to make complex compositional decisions and visual effects via filters, the graphics drawing toolbox, color effects, and artful use of text.

NCYP 208 Make your own Comic Book (Grades 6-8)

Grades 6-8: In this course, students practice the art of telling stories through pictures. Formal aspects of the narrative are applied by combining the written word with visual sequences. Students learn how storylines are developed, formats are considered and characters created. Observation skill-building helps students develop a basis for their fantasy figures, heroes, and heroines. Each student explores animation techniques and produces a comic strip consisting of several frames as well as a multi-page comic book.

NCYP 209 Learn to See and Draw the Face (Grades 6-8)

Grades 6-8: What do we look like? How do we draw ourselves and each other? In this course, students receive directed instruction related to the anatomy and structure of the human head. Considering the skull as the basis for shaping the head and face, students work from skull models, diagrams, each other and themselves in developing understandings and skills needed to effectively represent the human head and face.

NCYP 220 Making Videos (Grades 6-8)

ONLINE Grades 6-8: This fun yet intensive course is designed for super-motivated students who want to learn creative video making. Students are idea-generators, scriptwriters, prop creators and actors in this exciting production. Fundamentals of video making are learned through exercises in writing, shooting, and editing. In addition, students learn how to plan a complex project, research a subject, create a storyboard and work as a member of a production team. Reviewing and discussing the work is an ongoing part of the program. Students work in small groups to produce their final projects.

NCYP 112 Art Inspired by Nature (Grades K-2)

Grades K-2: In this course, students look at the natural world around them as inspiration for creating their art. This course spans a wide range of art processes, media, and dimensions (2D and 3D) such as drawing from observing nature, sculpting nature-inspired forms, using natural materials for mixed media collage, recording changes in nature, and much more. Through looking at the work of artists including Georgia O'Keeffe, Frank Lloyd Wright, Sumi brush painters, and Native American artists, students determine the influences of nature on the art of various times and places. Students can directly study different natural forms for use in creating their compositions based on what is in the world around them.

NCYP 116 Making Art with Dinosaurs! (Grades K-2)

Grades K-2: Come with us on an imaginary journey through the Jurassic period. Encounter ancient reptiles, prehistoric plants, and uncover fascinating fossils! Using ideas and experiences from our archeological journeys, students create drawings, paintings, and sculptural forms to create personal visual responses to what they have discovered.

NCYP 254 Unconventional Painting (Grades 6-8)

Grade 6-8: In this course, students will use acrylic paint to explore expressive uses of color, color mixing, and color theory. Using a variety of painting surfaces, students will paint in both traditional and unconventional ways, with brushes of various sizes and unconventional tools such as spatulas, squeegees, and combs. Through critique and peer feedback, this course offers opportunities for students to think deeply about their work and the meaning behind their paintings.

NCYP 200 Wearable Art and Sustainable Design (Grades 6-8)

Grades 6-8: Students in this class use a variety of fabrics and fibers for creating artworks. Students explore stitching, weaving, tie-dye, and natural dye techniques, as well as combinations of created and found materials in creating their art. Students will examine the techniques of artists such as Xenobia Bailey, Rosie Lee Tompkins, Faith Ringgold, Joyce Scott, and Melissa S. Cody and will use fabrics and fibers as a means of creative expression.

NCYP 223 Drawing from Observation and Imagination (Grades 6-8)

Grades 6-8: This course is designed to help students refine their skills in observational drawing and painting, making purposeful choices about lines, form, and color. Students will experiment with materials as they learn to make decisive lines and cohesive color palettes and apply both realistic and expressive colors to their pieces. Art exemplars will be used to emphasize the incredible diversity of styles and expressiveness that can be achieved with color, line, and texture.

NCYP 135 By the Sea (Grades K-2)

Grade K-2: In this course students take on the role of undersea explorers and artists in discovering and responding to the many aspects of the sea and seashore environment. Activities include creating sea creatures, undersea dioramas, using a variety of media in responding to stories and learning about ways that illustrators of children’s books and artists used the sea as inspiration for their art.

NCYP 227 Drawing Workshop for Middle School (Grades 6-8)

Grades 6-8.Fast-paced drawing course engages students in a variety of short and sustained studies intended to develop drawing skills and abilities. Different approaches, tools, materials, and techniques are presented and explored using a diverse range of drawing media, from pen and pencil to color explorations in pastel and paint. Students create drawings from observation, imagination, and in response to the art of master artists and their peers. Written reflection, self-assessment, and ability to participate in group critiques are key components of this course.

NCYP 228 Self Portraits and Journaling (Grades 6-8)

Grades 6-8.If you like to capture moments of life through images, drawings, text, and stories, this course is for you! Learn innovative ways that artists use the journal/sketchbook as a vehicle for telling personally meaningful stories. Using both a literal representation of self (the self-portrait) and figurative expression of personal stories, students explore a variety of ways to express who they are on the outside and inside. As a starting point, students construct books that will become the holding form for journaling concepts, memories, stories, preferences, opinions, dreams and much more. Emphasis will be on journaling via the written word, then using the imagery created by those words to develop drawings, paintings and collages using a variety of wet and dry media. Each session will emphasize a ‘chapter’ in the students’ ongoing story.

NCYP 160 Handbuilding with Clay (6-8)

Grades 6-8 .Throughout the centuries, hand-built clay objects have served numerous purposes, allowing people to transport materials, store grains, protect treasures, and hold liquids. Students to pinch clay forms, use slip and score techniques to join pieces of clay, make even coils, and roll even slabs. Using a rich array of clay techniques using only hand-held tools and processes, students experiment with drape-molds, hand-built vessels, functional items, and decorative sculpture. Under-glazing and glazing techniques are used to embellish clay surfaces.

NCYP 164 Sculpting in Low Relief (Grades 3-5)

Grades 3-5. Students in this course will explore opportunities to tell stories in images through the combination of painted surface and sculptural objects that exist within low relief sculpture. Neither purely flat nor fully 3-D, students will use stories, verbal and written, to create images in a variety of low relief techniques ranging from clay, foil, cardboard, found objects and plaster.

Grades K-2: This course is an exciting balance of learning how to see and how to capture contours, apply tones, and develop shading to make objects 'pop' off the page. With the basic understanding that in order to draw well, one must first learn how to see, students are engaged in fun-looking exercises that challenge them to use their eyes and minds to collect information about the objects, people, and places around them. NCYP 361 Illustration Wet and Dry Media (Grades 9-12)

Grades 9-12: Illustration is everywhere! Come learn the fundamentals of illustrating with wet and dry media, and how to take your hand drawn images through a digital process for print purposes. Young artists begin by responding to single image prompts related to newly acquired media techniques with emphasis on composition of content, then finish with designing their own narrative to illustrate!
