The Space for Creative Black Imagination

An interdisciplinary Making and Research institute

As part of its institution-wide strategic plan, the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) presents The Space for Creative Black Imagination, an interdisciplinary Making and Research institute.  MICA (pronounced "my-ka") is home to top-ranked fine arts, design, electronic media, art education, liberal arts, and professional studies degree and non-credit programs. The Space for Creative Black Imagination is the first of its kind to be established and hosted by an art and design college, and builds on MICA’s legacy as the first independent, continuously degree granting college of art and design.

The Space for Creative Black Imagination is co-founded by Dr. Mel Michelle Lewis and Dr. Raél Jero Salley, who is currently director.  As both artists and scholars, Dr. Lewis and Dr. Salley see responses to urgent questions about culture, race, and social justice as opportunity for new paradigms and imaginings that are unfettered by conventional constraints of disciplinarity, scale, material, or process. Generous funding and institutional support for The Space for Creative Black Imagination is provided by Dr. Sheri Parks and MICA’s President, Sammy Hoi.
