AY21 Reopening Workgroups
Key Goals
Academic Scenarios + Integrative Academic Planning
- Develop guidance for faculty/programs across all divisions on the key academic scenarios and how to prepare for the Fall.
- Conduct analysis of the curriculum to determine what courses can be held entirely online, what courses can be hybridized, and what courses will require access to the physical campus.
- Work continuously with FEC/CRAB to incorporate faculty understanding, expectations and voice within emerging educational, instructional staffing and financial planning.
- Integrate plan for Fabrication Studios to support demands of reworked curriculum.
- In consultation with “Healthy, Safe, and Sustainable Campus” group, develop plans for reallocating space in line with this curricular analysis.
- Provide summer faculty training/guidance for development of online and hybrid courses.
- Liaise continuously with President’s Council, other R5 groups, internal groups and Faculty, Staff and Student leadership regarding academic planning for Fall 2020 and AY2021.
Communications for All Constituencies
- Provide timely, accurate, and relevant communications to all of MICA’s audiences both internally and externally in support of MICA’s institutional efforts for campus opening and ongoing operation during the Reopen and Recovery phases
- Create systems and processes to obtain, ascertain relevance, and distill incoming information from internal and external sources for integration into an agile communications flow.
- Serve as first-stop for groups that seek to conduct outreach / communicate to students, parents, faculty and staff in order to ensure equity and appropriately diverse viewpoints are integrated. Coordinate and streamline the gathering, sharing and learning from that input.
- Ensure our communications blind spots as a PWI are cleared.
- Desilo communications/information sources and eliminate duplicative efforts through cross-departmental communications audits.
- Enhance/consolidate existing communications vehicles and channels that are effective, eliminate those that are not, and create new ones where there are gaps.
- Increase data-driven decision making capacity by leveraging consolidated and centralized information gathering processes.
Community of Care: Campus & Baltimore Phase I
- Incorporate into MICA’s COVID-19 navigation actions of care for MICA and Baltimore that are informed by the understanding of the needs of people and the cultures of the college and the city.
- Encourage mutual care and ensure the communal well-being of the MICA campus community over the summer and through the Fall 2020 reopening.
- Enliven MICA’s tenet of “We model a community of care.”
Enrollment Melt Prevention
- Using three targeted subgroups, plan and coordinate efforts to minimize new and returning student attrition in the lead up to the Fall 2020 semester.
Healthy, Safe, and Sustainable Campus
- Identify the public health measures, policies and guidelines that need to be implemented to minimize the risk of COVID-19 being spread to campus community members.
- Making the campus healthy and safe, including but not limited to these areas – facilities, dining, transportation.
- Consider implications of all potential measures on sustainability and identify solutions that are sustainability-friendly.
Human Resources: Ideas & Support for a Changed Workplace – Phase I
- Explore ways to support and engage employees during COVID-19.
- Analyze survey results and gather additional information to identify challenges and opportunities for employee engagement while transitioning back into the workplace.
- Provide actions and recommendations that will address morale challenges related to the COVID-19 crisis and improve previous scores.
Reopening Steering
- Integrate the input from the R5 work groups to coordinate and stage academic, office, and operational reopening, as well as related communications
- Expand the Emergency Leadership Group (ELG) to include faculty, parent, staff, and student leaders
Student Support + Success: Student Life
- Creatively maintain the vibrance and spirit of the MICA on-campus and in-person community in the context of anticipated physical distancing and other public health measures.
- In case of a deferred physical reopening of the campus, similarly seek to engage the MICA community using virtual methods.
Student Support + Success: Class of 2020
- Identify ongoing ways for MICA to both celebrate and support the Class of 2020 as they launch into their first professional year.
- Include, but not limited to, the consideration and planning of an in-person Class of 2020 exhibition when viable, as well as how MICA can best provide access to resources such as fabrication spaces, labs, studios, etc.
- Continue to engage the Class of 2020 as partners in the above work.
Student Support + Success: Clinical Services
- Assess what is necessary to ensure adequate student-facing clinical resources are available and resourced for the Fall 2020 semester.
- Include, but not limited to, considerations of telemedicine, the physical maintenance and sterilization of clinical spaces, ensuring effective communication with the State of Maryland and other public health partners, and access to appropriate medical expertise.
Student Support + Success: Residential Life
- Ensure an orderly and safe on-campus student residential experience.
- Include, but not limited to, the need for on-campus quarantine spaces, apartment cleaning & maintenance, and the move-in / move-out process, among other things.
