Operational Mode 1

Health Metrics

State and/or Baltimore City regulations prohibit on-campus activities.

Campus Operations

Campus: MICA’s Campus is closed.

Academic: All instruction is online/remote. No remote support services provided.

Residential: Very limited number of students with housing hardship living on campus. MICA Student Health Center open with reduced hours.

Staff and Faculty: Staff and faculty are teleworking.

Facilities and Services: Maintenance of buildings and equipment continues. Limited Campus Safety coverage of MICA properties. MICA Postal Operations open 1 day per week for MICA staff and faculty only. Campus Shuttles operating on a very limited basis for hardship students in residence halls. All dining services closed.

Health and Safety: Face coverings and adherence to all other public health and safety measures required. Vendors access is limited to emergency response. The MICA representative shall schedule the vendor and coordinate with Campus Safety.

Greater than 50 new cases per 100k in population in Baltimore City.

Over 8%: test positivity rate in Baltimore City.

Over 10%: test positivity rate in State of Maryland.

Campus Operations

Campus: MICA campus is open for very limited purposes.

Academic: All instruction is online/remote. Curbside pickup of equipment, fabrication service bureaus; contactless checkout of library resources in place. Field-based experiences are primarily online/remote. No in-person experiences are required. College and program policies for field-based activities are observed.

Residential: Residence halls may be open in a highly limited capacity, at no more than one per apartment for those with housing hardship or priority academic status. MICA Student Health Center open with reduced hours. COVID testing available for symptomatic students and their close contacts.

Staff and Faculty: Staff and faculty are teleworking unless their physical presence is needed on campus.

Facilities and Services: Maintenance of buildings and equipment continues. Limited Campus Safety coverage of MICA properties. MICA Postal Operations open 2 days (M,W) per week for MICA students, staff and faculty only. Campus Shuttles operating on a very limited basis for hardship students in residence halls. Curbside pickup and shipping services for College Store in place. All dining services closed. Limited access for faculty who need to use campus internet services for classes.

Health and Safety: Face coverings and adherence to all other public health and safety measures required. Vendors access is limited to emergency response. The MICA representative shall schedule the vendor and coordinate with Campus Safety. Travel is highly discouraged throughout the semester and during the two mini-breaks. Anyone who does travel is required to be tested immediately upon return. COVID testing available for symptomatic students and close contacts of students who test positive.

Note: These City/State metrics will be considered within a larger context and taking into account recent trends.

MICA Campus

5 or below: Number of staff/faculty cases per calendar month attributed to campus activities.

10 or below: Number of student cases per calendar month attributed to campus activities.

3% or below: positivity rate for faculty/staff (7 day average).

5% or below: positivity rate for students (7 day average).

Not less than 15 isolation beds available for two consecutive weeks.

Sufficient supply of PPE for students and staff.

Adequate supply of alcohol hand sanitizer and disinfectant.

Adequate supply of nasal swabs to support student and staff testing.

Testing

Less than 48 hour test time turnaround (goal).

Below 4 days average test turnaroundtime for for two prior weeks.

Campus Operations

Campus: MICA's campus is open for limited access to students, staff, and faculty.

Academic: Primary mode of instruction is online/remote. Limited/modified access and activities for students. Curbside pick-up continues for equipment checkout and remote fabrication production on a limited basis. Access as assigned by the programs to individual studios and workspaces for graduate students with physical distancing and masks required. Access as assigned by the departments to individual or semi-private studios and workspaces for undergraduate seniors with physical distancing and masks required. Limited and modified access to Academic Services Fabrication studios & shops with physical distancing for graduate students and undergraduate seniors. Some in-person curricular and co-curricular in-person engagements on a highly limited basis for students who are able to access the MICA campus. All gatherings must comply with most current guidance for Baltimore City and/or the State of Maryland. Library open for contactless checkout and return of circulating items and use of special collections by appointment by MICA students, staff, and faculty only. Field-based experiences may be online/remote, hybrid or in-person. No in-person experiences are required. College and program policies for field-based activities are observed.

Visitors: The MICA campus and available services are for MICA students, staff and faculty only. The campus is closed to visitors, including family, friends and guests. A process for exceptions based on special circumstances is being considered.

Residential: Residence halls are open; limited to 2 students per apartment. MICA Student Health Center open for normal hours of operation. MICA has comprehensive COVID testing program in place for asymptomatic individuals.

Staff and Faculty: Staff and faculty are teleworking unless their physical presence is needed on campus.

Facilities and Services: On-campus dining open at limited capacity and take-out at Meyerhoff, and for take-out only at Cafe Doris. Glace Grill and Java Corner will be closed. College Store open for online shopping only with curbside pickup and shipping. Facilities Maintenance of buildings and equipment operating at enhanced levels. MICA Postal Operations open 3 days per week for MICA students, staff and faculty only. Campus Safety continues at normal operational levels. Campus Shuttles operating with health protocols in place on a limited basis for students, faculty, and staff accessing the campus.

Health and Safety: Face coverings and adherence to all other public health and safety measures required. Access by vendors is limited and requires approval by Vice President, Vice Provost or Associate Vice President. The MICA representative shall schedule the vendor and coordinate with Campus Safety. Pre-Arrival and weekly COVID testing will be required of asymptomatic students, faculty and staff coming to campus on a regular basis. COVID testing available for symptomatic students and close contacts of students who test positive.

Travel: Travel is highly discouraged throughout the academic year, including the planned spring mini-breaks. Anyone who does travel is required to be tested on arrival back at MICA.

City and State regulations permit campus to be open.

MICA in collaboration with our consulting epidemiologists is continuously assessing its internal community data as well as local, regional, national, and global public health sources like the State of Maryland. This continual assessment will inform our ongoing OM4 strategy and will provide the College with the information needed to adapt OM4 if necessary.

Campus Operations

Campus: MICA's Campus is open to MICA students, staff and faculty.

Academic:  Educational experience prioritizes the return to the physical campus and in-person instruction. Instruction follows Course Modality Definitions/Expectations for face-to-face and hybrid courses.

In-person class meetings are mostly returned to pre-COVID size, with some modifications to occupancy and/or scheduling parameters to coordinate space use. Indoor masking is required in all indoor teaching spaces and no eating allowed in instructional spaces.

Masks may be removed briefly in the classroom for beverage breaks. Meals will be permitted in designated MICA dining areas, including mask break tents, and outdoors.

Curricular and co-curricular in-person engagements allowed with some modifications or restrictions; gatherings must follow MICA’s Indoor Auditorium & Large Meeting Spaces Guidelines for Operational Mode 4.

Modified full access to studios, workspaces, shops, and fabrication studios for all students enrolled in classes. Service bureau/remote production continues to facilitate fabrication instruction.

Library will be open for use by students, staff, and faculty with some modifications to occupancy and/or scheduling parameters to coordinate space use. The library will be continuing all new services introduced in AY21, with the exception of contactless pickup.

Field-based experiences, including academic field trips, may be in-person (with some modifications or restrictions) or hybrid depending upon what is deemed the most robust educational experience. College and program policies for field-based activities are observed. Galleries and all exhibitions will follow the standards of Operational Mode 4, including any policies and guidelines for campus visitors.

Visitors: Visitors are allowed on campus for essential educational and College activities.
A Revised OM4 On-Campus Visitation Policy will be published soon.

Residential: Residence halls are open for normal use; designated quarantine and isolation spaces will be reserved. MICA Health Center open for normal operations.

Staff and Faculty: Staff and faculty return to campus to support students/campus operations and to provide hybrid or face-to-face instruction; job positions and employees assessed for telework eligibility

Facilities and Services: Food service available at all four campus locations. In-person dining at Meyerhoff Dining Hall will be at lower density with physical distancing. Grab and Go for Café Doris, with outdoor patio and tent seating on Cohen Plaza and in one Lazarus parking lot. Grab and Go only for Glace Grill and Java Corner. (These plans may be refined as we get closer to fall.)

MICA Postal Operations open 5 days a week for MICA students, staff and faculty only.

Campus Shuttles operating normal routes and schedules for on-campus buildings and residences, with limited hours for off-campus locations.

Health and Safety: Indoor masking required. Breaks for safely unmasking, and eating and drinking will be provided in all classes of extended length.

Travel:All MICA international travel programs are suspended until further notice. Travel within the State of Maryland is permitted. Domestic travel, outside of the State of Maryland, is allowed when approved by the responsible Vice President. International travel necessary to College operations is allowed when approved by the responsible Vice President.
