Accommodation of Disabilities
The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, its amendments, and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 mandate equal opportunities for individuals with disabilities. MICA is committed to full compliance with these and other federal, state, and local laws that prohibit discrimination against qualified persons with disabilities.
The Human Resources office is responsible for coordinating efforts to comply with these disability laws, including investigation of any complaint and is available to address questions and concerns related to any accommodation issue. Americans with Disability Act (ADA) claims are administered by The Hartford.
How is disability defined?
Under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, and the ADA Amendments Act of 2008, a person is considered to have a disability if (1) he or she has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities (such as hearing, seeing, speaking, breathing, performing manual tasks, walking, caring for oneself, learning, or concentrating); (2) has a record of having such an impairment; or (3) is regarded as having such an impairment class.
What is an Accommodation?
A reasonable accommodation is a modification or change in the academic atmosphere, workplace, or the way things are customarily done that provides an equal opportunity to a student or employee with a disability. Examples of reasonable accommodations may include, but are not limited to: acquiring or modifying adaptive equipment, extended time for test-taking, job restructuring, modified schedules, providing note-takers or interpreters, removing readily achievable physical barriers, and providing paid or unpaid leave.
Students with Disabilities
MICA is committed to providing qualified students with disabilities with reasonable accommodations and support needed to ensure equal access to all programs and activities of the College.
Requests for accommodations are considered on a case-by-case basis. Students may request accommodations through Accessibility and Disability Services (ADS), and are encouraged to contact ADS prior to arrival on campus to discuss the accommodation process.

Employees with Disabilities
Pursuant to the ADA, MICA will provide reasonable accommodation(s) for qualified employees with disabilities. An accommodation is not reasonable if it poses an undue hardship to the College.
