Application Requirements and Guidelines
Your Canvas Folio project, Google Doc or Slides, or website/interactive work must:
- Contain only your own original work (collaborative work is acceptable)
- Google Docs/Slides sharing settings must be set to "Anyone with a link can view"
- Canvas Folio settings set to "Public"
- Be kept available and unchanged through the end of the Spring semester
Application Options
Your Project may contain any one of the following application options:
Note: "Digital" only implies that the work must be converted into a file format that can be uploaded.
A. Up to 10 Digital Works
Each image must be:
- 300 dpi
- .jpeg or .gif formatted (.gif loop length must be 18 seconds or shorter)
- .mp3, .mp4, or .mov format (must be 18 seconds or shorter)
- You may include image captions: title, dimensions, and date or short description (1-2 short sentences)
B. Up to 5 Digital Works and Up to 1 Minute 30 Seconds of Media
Each image must be:
- 300 dpi
- .jpeg or .gif formatted (.gif loop length must be 18 seconds or shorter)
- .mp3, .mp4, or .mov format (must be 18 seconds or shorter)
- You may include image captions: title, dimensions, and date or short description (1-2 short sentences)
Each media file must be:
- Video, animation, audio, or documentation of time-based work
- .mp3, .mp4, or .mov format
- Files may contain one media work or several cut together into one file
- You may include image captions: title, dimensions, and date or short description (1-2 short sentences)
- For video documentation of time-based art, performance, or installation, any sound must be part of the original work, not added for the purpose of the scholarship review. However, voice-over to assist in clarification or "to set the stage" is acceptable. It may not be used to describe meaning, technique, your process, interpretation, or intention.
C. Up to 3 Minutes of Media
Each media file must be:
- Video, animation, audio, or documentation of time-based work
- .mp3, .mp4, or .mov format
- Files may contain one media work or several cut together into one file
- You may include image captions: title, dimensions, and date or short description (1-2 short sentences)

D. Interactive Work
- Provide a link to a webpage with interactive work instead of a portfolio project
- Juries will spend 3 minutes viewing/interacting with the work
E. Personal Website
- Provide a link to a personal webpage instead of a portfolio project
- Juries will spend 3 minutes viewing/interacting with the work
F. Written Work - Available to Art History or HMST majors only - Option 1 or 2
- Provide a link to a Canvas Folio Project or Google Document of up to 2500 words in length
- Document's Sharing Settings must be set to "Anyone with the link can view" or "Public"
- May be one paper or several smaller works combined into one document
- Acceptable art historical writing may be (but not limited to): exhibitions reviews, research papers, essays, or formal analyses. Acceptable Humanistic Studies writing may be: book reviews, research papers, essays, formal analysis or original creative writing.
- Written work in addition to a visual/interactive Canvas Folio Project or Google Doc
- A link to a written work (no minimum but not to exceed 2500 words) can be included in your Google Doc or directly included in the Canvas Folio Project submission. If you are submitting a URL for a website or interactive work, both will need to be linked in a Google Doc. The addition must be a separate Google document if using the Google Doc option and have the same sharing settings. All should be noted as Art History Additional Submission or HMST Additional Submission.
Note: Collaborative work is welcome, but the applicant must have written permission from the other collaborator(s) before applying. A short email giving permission can be sent to competitivescholarshipsrus@mica.edu.
