They exhibit in national, regional, and international museums and galleries, and are represented in major public and private collections around the world.
MICA faculty regularly receive highly competitive grants from such organizations as Creative Capital, Guggenheim, and other national and international funding organizations for their projects. They are winners of every national prize offered to artists—from Fulbright Fellowships to Oscars, Louis Comfort Tiffany to Anonymous was a Woman, and Joan Mitchell Foundation Grants.
They are represented in hundreds of public and private collections—from MOMA to Stedelijk, and they lecture and are visiting artists globally.
Ellen Lupton is the Betty Cooke and William O. Steinmetz Design Chair at MICA. She has authored and co-authored numerous books about graphic design, including Thinking with Type, now in its third edition. Lupton is also Curator Emerita at Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in New York City.
Painting and Drawing faculty member Tony Shore ’93 (Painting BFA) studied at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture and received his MFA from Yale University School of Art. His award-winning work has been a part of solo and group exhibitions across the U.S., France, and China.
Ryan Hoover ’06 (Mount Royal School of Art MFA) – a 2024 National Science Foundation Convergence Accelerator Grant recipient – is an artist who employs a range of digital, biological, and traditional artistic media to explore technology, its history, and the future of its impact on society and the individual. He has played a leading role in the development of MICA's Digital Fabrication Studio.
Harvey Award winning artist José Villarrubia is internationally known for his comics color work and editing. He has been nominated for the Eisner Award twice and regularly works for major American comic publishers (Marvel Comics, DC Comics, Dark Horse Publishing, Image Comics) as a colorist and digital painter.
MICA Illustration chair Shadra Strickland is an award-winning author and illustrator, renowned for her distinct contributions to children's literature. Her illustrations have graced the pages of works by authors like Toni Morrison, Renèe Watson, and Delores Jordan. She proudly received the Ezra Jack Keats Award for her debut book, “BIRD,” in collaboration with Zetta Elliott.
Mike Weikert ’05 (Graphic Design MFA) and Lee Davis are co-directors of the Center for Social Design, a multi-disciplinary studio bringing together over 250 students, faculty, and outside partners from government, nonprofit and business sectors to collaborate on innovative ideas for positive social change.
Animation faculty member Laurence Arcadias brings an extraordinary record of professional experience in the field of animation to MICA. Among her many successes is an NEA Research: Artworks grant awarded to MICA on her behalf, as well as a collaboration with NASA scientists on several short films.
Nadia Hironaka, a 2015 Guggenheim Fellowship recipeint, is full-time faculty in MICA’s Film & Video and Animation departments. In addition to exhibiting in galleries and film festivals worldwide, she is co-founder of Screening, Philadelphia’s first gallery dedicated to the presentation of innovative and challenging works on video and film.
Architectural Design faculty Timmy Aziz is a Registered Architect and a Certified Passive House Consultant. He is passionate about Passive House design’s application to vacant Baltimore row-houses in order to meet the need for Affordable Housing and aims to develop prototypes in collaboration with Baltimore organizations and partners.
