February 5 Campus Memo

An update to the MICA community about the decision to cancel travel to China.

As many of you are aware, the U.S. Department of State issued a Level 4 Travel Advisory – Do Not Travel to China – its highest level of warning in response to the rapid spread of the novel coronavirus.  Late last week the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also issued its highest travel warning level and the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.

In light of these developments and in order to best ensure the health of MICA faculty, staff, and students, effective immediately all MICA-funded travel to China is suspended until further notice.  At present, several previously scheduled trips to China by faculty and staff members have been cancelled, but it’s important for the broader campus to know about this travel restriction and plan accordingly.

We have also been in direct contact with our students from China to provide support. We will continue to closely monitor the situation concerning international travel as it may have a range of impacts on individual members of our community.

If you have questions or if you are anticipating travel to China on MICA business within the next six months, please contact the Office of International Education at internationaleducation@mica.edu or 410.225.2243.
