My Senior Thesis “Reimagining Chintz” is a lookbook which modernizes traditional Portuguese and Brazilian chintz patterns, while honoring the textile. I created five collections for different rooms in the home. The collections Morning Bloom, Dreamy Garden, Pearlescent Undertow, Mushroom Fields, and Opportune Vermillion incorporate sophisticated color pallets, traditional design layouts and motifs of nature, with an unconventional twist. Chintz textiles have a rich history and have gone through many beautiful iterations, for it has been adored worldwide. I grew up surrounded by Brazilian chintz, also known as chita, and it has been a source of inspiration throughout my artistic career. Chintz textiles are celebrated and popularly used in the NorthEast region of Brazil, to decorate clothing, homes, venues and festivals. It has deep roots with DIY culture for it is an abundantly used fabric which is not commonly manufactured on household items. As a surface designer, I saw this as an opportunity to create these five collections of modernized chintz patterns because I want to see them in the world. I believe my Reimagining Chintz lookbook can be used by people of all ages and gender, who enjoy unique imagery and appreciate history.
