English as a Second Language
The Writing Studio welcomes ESL students. Tutors can offer assistance with any number of facets relating to written English, as well as basic conversational English that may apply to presentations, critiques, and the arts. We encourage those students who require intensive support to schedule regular meetings.
What to Expect In a Tutoring Session
Our experienced group of professional tutors will engage students in conversation, to determine what the students wish to accomplish. Generally, tutors will first tackle "global issues" such as a paper's overarching argument, before counseling students on "local issues" such as sentence structure. Typically, sessions are designed to last 50 minutes.
How Students Can Prepare in Advance
Students should arrive at the Writing Studio with a solid grasp of the assignment. It's a good idea to bring related materials, such as an assignment sheet and course texts. Tutors will not edit or proofread an essay but can offer students strategies for completing those tasks on their own.
Avoiding Plagiarism
Tutors can help students to cite sources properly. If in doubt about documenting sources of information, students should consult a faculty member, a librarian in the Decker Library, or a Writing Studio tutor. The Writing Studio is a committed partner in the College's efforts to stamp out plagiarism.
