Students can maximize their summer breaks by engaging in supervised classes and recreation that promote freedom of expression in a structured way right on MICA's main campus (1300 W. Mt Royal Avenue, Baltimore).

NCYP 124 Animal Explorers (Grades K-2)

Grades K-2. Young artists will explore the animal kingdom while learning how to represent an idea both in two- and three-dimensional form. Inspiration will be pulled from fiction and non-fiction books, investigating themes presented, in order to create rich visual concepts. Each class will teach new ways of illustrating and sculpting animals with a tour of both media and technical processes.

NCYP 102 The Art of Bookmaking (Grades 6-8)

Grades 6-8. The art of bookmaking was once a craft limited to written books. Today, handmade books have become works of art using creative and inventive approaches to bind books that tell stories, hold favorite photographs or serve as journals to hold memories and ideas. In this class, children see books in a new way as they explore unique ways to tell a story. Students learn techniques for making accordion books, scrolls, pamphlets, codex binding, Japanese-style binding and pop-up books. They learn how to make handmade paper and use it in one of their own book.

NCYP 203 Drawing 101 (Grades 6-8)

(Grades 6-8) Designed for students who want to improve drawing skills and work towards more realistic drawings, this course focuses on drawing from observation. Students are guided through a carefully sequenced, step-by-step process designed to develop the student's perception and thinking skills. Based upon exercises in Betty Edwards' Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, this approach has been successful in improving students' ability to draw realistically, even for those who think they cannot draw. As such, it provides the young artist with an excellent bridge between drawing symbolically and working more realistically.

NCYP 204 Emotional Expressions Grades K-2

NCYP 205 Creating Art with Adobe Photoshop (Grades 6-8)

Grades 6-8. This course involves students using digital imaging programs to create and manipulate images pixel by pixel! Students learn to use the Adobe Photoshop suite and scan images as they explore the potential of the medium and create personally meaningful compositions. Using various created and found images, students then learn how to make complex compositional decisions and visual effects via filters, the graphics drawing toolbox, color effects, and artful use of text.

NCYP 103 Reimagining Stories (Grades K-2)

Grades K-2. When a story is over, have you ever wondered, what happens next? Young artists put on their author hats and dream up visual sequels, prequels, plot twists, new characters, and “what if’s” for award winning stories we read each week. NCYP 104 Illustrating Stories, Pictures and Words (Grades 3-5)

Grades 3-5: Using children's literature and picture books as rich sources of imagery and storylines, students weave their own stories individually and in collaboration with peers. Students draw upon their natural tendency to tell colorful and elaborate stories and examine the work of artists/author-illustrators such as Ezra Jack Keats, Mitsumasa Anno, Vashti Harrison, Maurice Sendak, Andrea Beaty, and Eric Carle. Large-scale drawings, booklets, varied paper surfaces/techniques, and story performances are just a few of the creative ways stories will be recorded and passed on.

NCYP 215 Printmaking Workshop (Grades 3-5)

Grade 3-5: Young children are encouraged to explore textures and mark-making as they try out numerous ways of creating prints. From mono-print to relief prints, sun prints to handprints, students immerse themselves in how printing ink, paint, and other color media can help them see and understand shape, line, and texture. Students are encouraged to tap into their sense of play and imagination as they explore creative printing techniques.

NCYP 253 Mixed Media Workshop (Grades 9-12)

Grades: 9-12. In this course, students explore and apply ways in which disparate imagery and materials can be arranged to create compositions that are both aesthetically pleasing and expressive of ideas and feelings. Students explore the potential of a variety of ideas, images and materials in designing and creating compositions that have personal meaning. Using a balance of found images and created images, students are encouraged to create narrative works, with equal emphasis on treatment of the work’s surface, choice and arrangement of images, and selection of media. The notion of matching concepts to materials will be explored in-depth, and students will be exposed to an exciting array of media.

NCYP 315 Digital Photography (Grades 9-12)

Grades 9-12: Beginning with an understanding of compositional principles and the basic camera functions, features, and possibilities, students learn to create digital photographs. From a variety of prompts intended to tap into students' interpretation and experience of the visual world around them, students collect imagery in their daily lives, at home, and outdoors. As the course progresses, the class explores the Adobe Photoshop program as a tool to refine images and explore options in manipulating imagery for expressive purposes. Note: Students must have their own digital camera (phone or tablet camera or DSLR). Access to the Adobe Creative Suite is included for the duration of this course.

NCYP 200 Wearable Art and Sustainable Design (Grades 6-8)

Grades 6-8: Students in this class use a variety of fabrics and fibers for creating artworks. Students explore stitching, weaving, tie-dye, and natural dye techniques, as well as combinations of created and found materials in creating their art. Students will examine the techniques of artists such as Xenobia Bailey, Rosie Lee Tompkins, Faith Ringgold, Joyce Scott, and Melissa S. NCYP 224 My World in Three Dimensions

Grades: 4-6. One of the most exciting ways of making art is working with sculptural media to create three-dimensional art forms. In this course, students use sculptural media including wire, plaster, wood, clays and other natural materials to create sculptures, assemblages and installations. In the process, students gain experience with many sculptural forms and media, discover a variety of artists and heighten spatial and kinesthetic awareness. Using sketches and working from observation, memory and imagination, students make personally meaningful work that is inspired by their interests and objects of our everyday world.

Look around, cardboard tubes and boxes, plastic bottles and bottle caps, plastic forks and spoons, a broken coffee mug. Everywhere you look there is an object of waste waiting for a new purpose. In this course children will have the opportunity enhance perceptive skills by way of examining found objects for the countless alternative uses for creative expression. The magic happens when children respond to their imagination by creating sculptures, exploring surface design, or making collages, all which create narratives conveying a sense of playfulness and innovation.

Creatures in Clay

Grades 6-8: People from every part of the world use clay to create magical and secretive vessels, special guardian or protective figures, mythological creatures, small models, and portraits of everyday life. We will travel the world visiting other times in other places by looking at the art and artifacts that different cultures have created in clay. In this course, students develop their skills and learn new techniques for working with clay. Whether you are experienced in using clay or have never used it before, pack your bags and come along on this trip.

Grades 3-5: In this course, students will become artistic astronauts as they explore a variety of media and art making processes while addressing the theme of outer space! NCYP 144 Build It! Constructing Artistic Sculpture (Grades K-2)

Grades K-2. Do you have a knack for putting together unusual materials to create interesting three-dimensional objects? In this hands-on, multi-media sculptural course, students use additive techniques to attach, glue, twist, stack, tie, dangle and arrange as they explore the ways varied materials can be combined to create expressive forms that may be artful, functional or both. Materials such as found objects, wood, paper and board are used for construction of these innovative sculptures, then they are embellished with a variety of natural and man-made materials. Students are encouraged to use their own artful thinking to find and bring in interesting objects and materials for use in this course.

NCYP 327 Painting Technique and Processes (Grades 9-12)

Grades 9-12. Using a variety of paint media such as inks, watercolor, tempera paint, and acrylic paint, students in this course explore a variety of paint materials, brushes, and techniques, both traditional and non-traditional, to create a body of work that spans realism to expressive abstraction. Emphasis is on breaking "out of the box" in expressive use of color media, with a variety of prompts guiding students to make meaning and incorporate narratives into their work. This is a fast-paced class, with students generating a large body of studies and exercises as they build a strong foundation and comfort with each color medium. The confident painter will then be asked to synthesize this knowledge to create larger, cohesive paintings based on a selected theme.

Grades 4-6. Offers students an exciting opportunity to be both creator and performer in a dramatic artistic endeavor. Students explore a variety of 3-D processes as they create objects, props, puppets, masks, and other forms. Students will explore different ways stories can be told and experienced through objects and experiment and play in order for students to creatively tell their own stories. NCYP 175 WAYS OF SEEING: DRAWING WORKSHOP

GRADES 4-6: Grow as an artist by exploring your abilities to not only draw but to see. NCYP 177 The Expedition, Journey as Destination (Grades 4-6)

Grades 4-6. Get ready to embark upon an amazing journey of the imagination. In this course, students celebrate their elite prowess as explorers and find a unique way to showcase their fantastic discoveries. Students begin their journey by creating a map of a place that exists only their imaginations. Through rich narrative, visualization and exploration, students visit and explore their fantastic places, elaborating on ideas and documenting discoveries via drawing from observation, collage, printmaking, fiber arts, and sculpture. An explorer’s notebook is the holding form for sketches and notes, and the artifacts created and placed on the map help tell the story of each students travels.

NCYP 240 Fashion Drawing (Grades 6-8)

Grade 6-8: This course teaches students the fundamentals of drawing the croquis figure and designing a garment through sketching. Students will explore personal identity and style through fashion. Through sketching the figure and gaining techniques in drawing garments, students will learn different mediums and experiment with rubbing techniques to give the effect of various types of fabric while growing their technical skills in drawing and painting.

NCYP 276 Innovative and Metaphorical Self-Portraits (Grades 6-8)

Grades 6-8. Students begin with the traditional self-portrait and an understanding of basic facial proportions, then branch into thematic and/or metaphorical ideas about self as the basis for composing expressive self-portraits that may or may not include a face. Students begin with observational work using mirrors and dry drawing media such as charcoal, pastels, and pencil. Once this foundation is established, various prompts will guide students to think about expressing themselves via self-portrait in unusual, meaningful, and innovative ways.

NCYP 171 Illustration for Kids (Grades 4-6)

For the young illustrator who has a flair for the stylized, humorous, or zany, this class will exercise both your perceptual skills and your imaginations! Part realistic drawing, part imaginative drawing, part character development, and part storytelling, this course guides students through the steps an illustrator must go through, from securing a client with a specific artistic task in mind, going through the planning stages and concept development or an illustration job, prototyping, and eventually, coming up with finished illustrations intended for publication in advertisements, books, and other print media.

NCYP 169 Wearable and Plush Art (Grades 6-8)

Grades 6-8. Claes Oldenburg popularized it in the 1960's as soft sculptures but craft artists of today are bringing plush art into our homes making it a desirable and available art form. In this course students will have the opportunity to bring their imagination and ideas into a 3D realm not often explored in classrooms. Make wearable art, lively soft sculptures even tapestries by sewing, felting, knitting and collaging soft/fiber materials together. No class on July 4th.

NCYP 350 Character Design (Grades 9-12)

Grades 9-12: In this course, students will delve into the fascinating world of character design, exploring not only the physical aspects but also delving into the rich realm of personalities, facial expressions, and living environments. Beginning with a discussion about their favorite games and a detailed analysis of the characters within, students will gain insights into the intricate details that bring characters to life. Focused on figure drawing, individuality, and personality traits, through a series of dynamic drawing exercises, students will develop the skills needed to accurately portray their characters' unique qualities. NCYP LS102 Late One Week Session Grades K-2: Me and My Family in Art

SCHEDULE INCLUDES - Morning Course: 9:30 am - 12 noon; Mid-day Activities 12 noon - 1:00 pm; Afternoon Course: 1:00 - 3:30 pm Me and My Family in Art Grades K-2: Students begin by exploring how the theme of ‘family’ has been used throughout history in paintings, illustrations, books, and other visual media. Then, using family adventures, important memories, and daily happenings, young children use words and pictures to tell their own stories. Emphasis is on the use of descriptive words, personal experiences, expressive writing, and verbal story-telling. Shared narratives and collaborative work help students add richness and imagination to their stories. Using a visual journal, students record and embellish life experiences into fantastic adventures with a personal twist.

NCYP LS305 Late Summer One Week Session Grades 3-5: Art Inspired by Nature

SCHEDULE INCLUDES - Morning Course: 9:30 am - 12 noon -- ; Mid-day Activities: 12 noon - 1:00 pm; Afternoon Course: 1:00 - 3:30 pm Art Inspired by Nature Grades 3-5: In this course, students look at the natural world around them as inspiration for creating their art. This course spans a wide range of art processes, media, and dimensions (2D and 3D) such as drawing from observing nature, sculpting nature-inspired forms, using natural materials for mixed media collage, recording changes in nature, and much more. Through looking at the work of artists including Georgia O'Keeffe, Frank Lloyd Wright, Sumi brush painters, and Native American artists, students determine the influences of nature on the art of various times and places. Students can directly study different natural forms for use in creating their compositions based on what is in the world around them.

NCYP 267 Portfolio Prep for High School Entry (Grades 6-8)

Grades 6-8- This intense studio workshop begins with a review of students’ current art portfolios, with discussion about what a well-rounded high school portfolio might look like. Students keep a reflective journal and sketchbook as they identify areas to strengthen in their artwork. Working independently with the instructor, students then develop a plan for tailored art problems intended to highlight skills and flesh out their portfolios for presentation. This course is especially designed for students who need a portfolio for entrance into high school but is also open to those who wish to employ a more independent course of study.
