Part-Time Benefits Summary

Summary of Benefits for Part-time employees

Part-Time employees (staff and faculty members who work less than 30 hours a week) are eligible for Medical and Dental benefits through MICA. Part-time employees are responsible for 100% of the cost of the medical plan or dental plan they choose. In order to be eligible the part-time employee must meet the following requirements:

  • Part-time faculty must teach at least one course in both the Fall and Spring semesters,
  • Part-time staff employees must have an average of 20 hours a week for the past year (1040 hours),
  • Part-time employees must enroll in the Medical and/or Dental plan(s) within thirty days of their first anniversary of their hire date,
  • Part-time employees must purchase Medical and/or Dental insurance for a full year.

Part-time employees' coverage begins on the first day of the month following or coinciding with the employees' first anniversary of his/her hire date. If the employee misses this enrollment period, he/she will not be able to enroll until the next open enrollment period in April unless he/she has a life status change.

The medical offerings are through CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield. There are two options to choose from, (both provided by CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield) the Basic Preferred Provider Organization (Basic PPO) and the Premium Preferred Provider Organization (Premium PPO).

Part-time employees are responsible for 100% of the cost of the medical plan they choose. Payment is due on the 1st of each month (30 day grace period). Coverage will be cancelled if payment is not received within 30 days of due date.

MICA offers two Dental plans, both provided by United Concordia. The two dental plans are the DMO Dental Plan-Concordia Plus Plan and the PPO Dental Plan-Concordia Preferred Plan (Advantage Plus network).

Part-time employees are responsible for 100% of the cost of the dental plan they choose. Payment is due on the 1st of each month (30) day grace period. Coverage will be cancelled if payment is not received within 30 days of due date.

Part-time employees who work on average at least twenty (20) hours a week are eligible to enroll in the retirement plan (403b) through TIAA-CREF at any time as well as receive matching contributions as outlined in the schedule below. Once he/she is a participant in the plan he/she can make contribution changes at any time during the year. The minimum contribution is 1% of his/her income.

Workers' Compensation

In the case of on-the-job injury or illness, the College's workers' compensation insurance policy would be in effect. You must report the accident to Campus Safety, Human Resources, and your supervisor immediately. Human Resources will then file a workers' compensation claim on your behalf.

Liability

You are covered by the College's liability insurance while acting within the scope of your responsibilities on College business. This protection, however, covers only you the employee. It does not extend to your vehicle being used on College business. The vehicle is presumed to be covered by the owner's insurance policy. If you are unwilling to accept this limitation, you should not drive your personal vehicle on College business.

Social Security and Unemployment Compensation

All employees full and part-time are covered by Social Security on the standard matching basis. All employees are covered by the State of Maryland Unemployment Compensation Program.
