Voter Access Initiative

The Voter Access Initiative (VAI) is a non-partisan, cross-disciplinary group working to increase voter participation on campus and around Baltimore.

Our short-term focus is the midterm elections, particularly voter turnout:

  • In 2014, MICA’s voter registration rate (among eligible students, graduate and undergraduate), was 68%, above the national average of 59%
  • Voting Rate of Registered Voters: in 2014, MICA’s voter turnout rate of registered voters was 14.1%, significantly below the national average of 27%

Monday, November 5

Digital "office hours" for voters to ask questions 

Tuesday, November 6: Voting on Election Day

To vote on election day, you must be registered to vote in Baltimore.

Mount Royal Elementary and Middle School across from Founders Green will be a polling site, and there will be a “party at the poll” taking place from 10:30 a.m. - 4 p.m.

10:30am - 11:00am: Coffee & Cocoa to the Polls (Brown Lobby) 

  • plus a fun activity for all students

10:30am - 4:00pm: Party at the Polls (Brown Lobby) 

  • includes photobooth, music and snacks

 3:00pm - 3:45pm: Pizza to the Polls (Brown Lobby) 

  • plus a fun activity for all students

6:00pm: Aram Han Sifuentes Artist Talk (Lazarus)

Wednesday, November  7

1:30-4:30: Aram Han Sifuentes Protest Banner Workshop (Brown Lobby)

10am-1:30pm: Post-election Comfort Space,  Center for Identity & Inclusion

Thursday, November 8 

5:30 PM - 8:30 PM: Wide Angle Youth Media: Black Butterfly (Falvey Hall)

Find absentee voting information for every state.

Ballot information

Search for comprehensive information on candidates and platforms at ballotready.org. You can go through the entire ballot (for your address), add candidates to your ballot, and can print it out to take with you on election day.

Zipcar Incentive

Zipcar wants to encourage everyone to head to the polls. If you have a Zipcar membership and you reserve/drive a Zipcar on election night (November 6th, between 6-10 p.m.), you'll get a $20 driving credit* good for a future trip.

Join Represent Maryland, League of Women Voters, Baltimore Intercollegiate Alliance and MICA for a conversation on Maryland’s Ballot Box Questions H, E, F, (G, I).

Event tabling in the Lazarus Center at 6:30 with a moderated forum 7-8:30.

Black Butterfly: A youth media showcase on the theme “Why Black Lives Matter”

Join Wide Angle Youth Media for Black Butterfly, the culmination of Wide Angle's exploration of the student-selected theme "Why Black Lives Matter". Over the 2017-2018 school year, youth across Baltimore created hundreds of photographs, videos, and design projects about the Black experience in the United States. Their final projects depict Black struggle and Black joy, and reflect upon issues impacting individuals throughout the region.
