Application Requirements for International Students

All international applicants are required to submit the following information:

1. Proof of English Language Proficiency

In addition to the general application requirements, all applicants whose primary language is not English must demonstrate proficiency in both written and spoken English. English proficiency must be proven before an official admission decision can be made. The following are acceptable methods to demonstrate English proficiency:

A. TOEFL: A minimum overall band score of 75 on the IBT Test of English Language as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required for full admission. Candidates may submit their scores digitally or in hardcopy. MICA's institution code is 5399.

B. IELTS: A minimum score of 6.0 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is required. IELTS scores may be submitted digitally or in hardcopy. MICA's institution code is 5399.

C. English Language Education: A high school diploma, 3-year undergraduate degree, or masters degree at an accredited institution at which English is the language of instruction. The International Application Form provides instructions for submitting documentation based on the language of instruction by submitting a transcript or verification letter from their previous institution.

Please note that meeting the guidelines above is not a guarantee of admission. The average TOEFL IBT score among admitted students in 2018 was 90, and the average IELTS score among admitted students in 2018 was 6.5.

2. Certified Translations of Non-English Documents

If transcripts, degrees, recommendation letters or other official documents are not issued in English, international applicants are required to submit certified translations. The Office of Graduate Admission recommends World Education Services for educational document translation. Questions or concerns about official application documents can be directed to graduate@mica.edu.

3. Immigration and I-20 Information

No immigration, financial or visa documentation is required at the time of application. International candidates that receive an offer of admission will also receive the required forms as part of their admission packet.
